Scottish Investment Bank
The Scottish Investment Bank (SIB) is a division of Scottish Enterprise that provides investment funds to support company growth in Scotland.
SIB follows a co-investment and shared risk model, designed to help existing investors do more and to encourage new private investors into the market and to support ambitious SMEs.
SIB manages a number of funds, each of which has been designed to assist businesses and to boost Scotland’s economic performance. The SCF and SVF differ from other funds in this Guide in that they co-invest with a private sector partner.
Details of the investors which have partnership agreements with the SCF and SVF are given on SIB’s website www.scottish-enterprise.com/sib
Scottish Seed Fund (SSF)
The SSF provides seed and start-up finance to companies at the early stages of commercial development. At least 50% of the proposed total equity funding must be secured through private sector sources. Ideally, this should include at least one external equity investor. The SSF can invest from £20k to £250k alongside private sector investors, often business angels.
Scottish Co-investment Fund (SCF)
The SCF was established to address the financial needs of companies already in the early stages of development and potentially with limited revenues and market traction. The Fund co-invests through partnerships with professional risk capital investors, such as business angel syndicates and venture capital funds, in the range from £100k to £1m.
Scottish Venture Fund (SVF)
The SVF covers a later stage equity gap ensuring that companies entering their growth and expansion stages can access the capital they require. The Fund co-invests through partnerships with private sector partners, often venture capital funds and institutional investors, investing between £500k and £2m of equity and venture debt in deals ranging from $£2m to £10m.
SIB provides other funds listed elsewhere in this Guide:
Renewable Energy Investment Fund
Loans, equity investments, and guarantees for eligible projects
Scottish Plastics Loan Fund (in partnership with Zero Waste Scotland)
Loans of £50k to £1.25m to companies involved in plastics recycling or processing.
Scottish Loan Fund (managed by Maven Capital Partners)
Mezzanine loans between £250k and £5m
SIB also offers a Financial Readiness service, which is designed to work with companies to enhance their appeal to investors and lenders.
